The freestanding refrigerator

The counter-depth refrigerator

What size refrigerator should you choose?

When we talk about a 30-inch refrigerator or a 33-inch refrigerator, we are referring to the width of the appliance. 

But the height and depth of the appliance are also important!

The dimensions and configuration of refrigerators vary. However, most fall within a range of:

• 24 to 36 inches in width
• 60 to 72 inches in height
• 30 to 35 inches in depth

Note that the majority of models correspond to these dimensions. But a compact refrigerator, for example, will be smaller. And there are also larger ones.

How to measure the space needed for a refrigerator?

Take measurements of the height, width, and depth of the space where you plan to install your refrigerator. Also, check the availability of an electrical outlet near the intended location for your appliance.

Plan for clearance space

It is essential to plan for clearance around your refrigerator. This space helps to avoid overheating issues and preserve the durability of the compressor. 

To ensure optimal airflow and efficient operation, make sure to leave at least:

• 1/8'' or 0.30 cm of clearance on each side
• 1'' or 2.50 cm above 
• 2'' or 5 cm behind the appliance

Plan for the orientation of the door opening

If you opt for a model other than the refrigerator with French doors, check which direction the door opens. Some models have an opening to the left while others open to the right. On some models, it is sometimes possible to select either option according to your preferences.
